How Much Do Collection Agencies Charge?

How to compare contingency fees, fixed costs, internal effort, customer impact, and software economics.

By The CollectInHouse Team · Reviewed August 13, 2026

Agency pricing varies with account age, balance, volume, industry, services, jurisdiction, and expected recovery. A contingency percentage is only one part of the economic comparison.

Understand the fee base

Ask which payments trigger a fee, whether recalls or direct payments are commissionable, how legal placements are handled, and what minimums or pass-through costs apply.

Compare operating models

Software may use subscription, implementation, usage, telecommunication, processor, and support charges. Internal staffing and governance still matter in either model.

Evaluate non-price effects

Control of the customer experience, speed of data return, reporting, payment destination, complaints, and future customer value can materially affect the decision.
